What is SURJ?

About Us

East Alabama SURJ was founded in 2017 as Auburn-Opelika SURJ by a group of white people in the Auburn and Opelika areas who wanted to organize our communities to end racial injustice and white supremacy in our region, state, and nation. With a renewed sense of energy following the murders by police and vigilantes of Black folx such as Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Tony McDade, and Rayshard Brooks, we reformed in 2020 to counter the narratives of racism and white supremacy in East Alabama and beyond!
